In fourth grade, students gain fluency with whole-number arithmetic and also perform arithmetic with fractions and mixed numbers, including by expressing fractions as decimals. Building on their understanding of arithmetic, students find multiples and divisors of whole numbers. Students measure objects, convert between units of measurement and organize measurement data in plots. A new and important concept of angles is introduced. Students measure angles and define related geometric objects such as right angles and perpendicular lines.
